Greg & Marcy Derrick opened Riverwalk Laundry in November of 2011 after it had been out of business for over a year under previous ownership.. The building has been in the Greg’s family since the 1970’s when it was built by Greg’s father, Vernon “Fiddle” Derrick, who operated a tire store out of one side of the building for several years. The other side of the building was custom-built for Greg’s Aunt & Uncle, Hazel & Alton Holder who started a laundromat /wash & fold service, called Holders Laundry. Over the last 30+ years the laundry remained in operation under several owners, until it finally closed in 2010.
Greg & Marcy owned the building by that time, and started wondering what they should do next. Greg recalls “We’d be inside the building, just looking around, waiting for a sign to point us in a right direction. More times than not, 1, 2, sometimes 3 cars would pull up, and folks would start unloading their baskets of dirty clothes and heading for the door entrance. We’d apologize and explain we weren’t open. After that happened about a dozen times, we had our sign – we needed to reopen the place as laundramat!” Greg& Marcy then began a year long journey of researching laundramats all over Texas, while also researching various brands of equipment options. The result today is a clean, state-of-the art laundromat where you can find a friendly attendant on duty at all times to assist you with use of water-efficient front load washers in small to very large sizes that do a fantastic job in getting clothes really clean. The energy-efficient dryers provide quick dry time too. The attendants also provide wash & fold services for those who prefer to leave their dirty clothes for someone else to do the work. Just drop off one day, and pick up the next day folded (or hung if you bring hangers) nice and clean. Marcy says “It’s been fun to watch people who used to come here many years ago walk in for the first time and see the drastic change in the building’s updated appearance with the bright shiny stainless steel equipment. It makes you feel really good to have people tell you thanks over and over again for us being here and providing such a nice clean place for them to do their laundry”.
